Tasmania is yet another region that prides itself on it’s bread basket. It’s traditionally been known as the apple state but more recently is getting some notoriety for its wine, cheese, oysters and wild salmon. The dining choices were plentiful and we wrongly assumed that you had to be in the “big city” for a decent meal. Cafes were often wonderful options, but usually for breakfast and lunch. I took a photo of every memorable meal (so it would remain memorable) and finally decided to have a post devoted strictly on our favorite morsels.
Rosevears Hotel (on the Tamar River) specialized in this scrumptious chocolate cheesecake. At the Joseph Chromy winery restaurant near Launceston this Dark Chocolate Pave was accented with hazelnuts and fresh figs.
While in the Hobart area we visited Frogmore Creek Winery where their restaurant offered some extraordinary choices for lunch. The presentations were pretty incredible but the ingredients were so plentiful and unusual I can’t remember the details and the menu has now changed so I can’t cheat and look them up. You’ll notice someone in the kitchen was heavy-handed with the green dots but I’ll be damned if I recall what that flavor is now.
Frogmore CreekFrogmore CreekFrogmore CreekFrogmore CreekFrogmore CreekCalled Textures of Citrus, this dessert must be a mainstay on their menu since it was still there. It was made up of almond tuille, vanilla & mascarpone mousse, lemon ice cream, freeze dried fruit, orange, yuzu gel, mini meringue & milk crumble. To die for!Frogmore CreekThe Black-Footed Pig’s seared scallops with cauliflower skordalia, asparagus and caper & raisin dressing. The Pig’s ravioli of ricotta, mascarpone and spinach with walnut pesto. The Bridport Bunker was a former RSL club and still looked like one. But the word was it had the best food in town and when it beat out the Barnbougle Golf Club (a Top 100 in the world course), we decided we better try it. The experience was a great as was the food and I finally got some “fall-off-the-bone” American-style ribs that were finger-lickin’ tasty. After that we figured this couple of local yokel restaurateurs had to be able to make a lip-smacking dessert. We couldn’t decide between the raspberry ice cream slice and the passion fruit panna cotta. So she brought us a sample of both. Yeah, right! That slice was divine! And I cannot explain the word “slice” to you Americans. Just take my word for it.
How did you bring yourself to eat these culinary masterpieces? It would be like sticking a fork in the Mona Lisa or taking a bite off a Rodin. You can’t have your art and eat it, too!
I agree with Dave! These are works of art. If they tasted only half as good as they look…you would be in heaven! We realize that missing Frogmore Creek Winery in Hobart was a mistake. 🙁
(There weren’t too many calories in these delectables, were there?)

Or should be!!!
These food dishes are absolute works of art. And sounds as if they all tasted delicious too! I like the use of borage flowers on the citrus dessert!
I need another trip back to Tassie to check out Frogmore Creek and the other venues. Certainly know where to come to for recommendations.
They look fantastic and very envious of you both as i devour my Tuna sandwich. Enjoy the rest of the trip.
